A notebook, kept in public mostly so that I can find things again. The subject is narrow: small Linux servers, and the specific ways their configuration fails without telling anybody.

Everything here was written down because it cost me an evening. The recurring shape is a component that reports success while accomplishing nothing — a timer that fires and does no work, a filter that matches an empty set, a rotation job that produces empty files. None of it shows up in a health check. All of it shows up eventually.

If a post saves you that evening, good. If a post is wrong, it is wrong in public, which is the least bad place for it to be.

Colophon

Hand-written HTML and one stylesheet. No build step, no framework, no JavaScript, no fonts loaded from anywhere else. It is served as static files and it will still render in ten years.

There is no analytics and there are no cookies. The server keeps an access log for seven days for the sole purpose of noticing when something starts scanning it.
